ICMP Creative Music Production Tutor Jake Williams has explored the subject of radical education in electronic music through guest editing the prestigious academic journal, 'Organised Sound'

This edition of the journal - subtitled 'Radical education in electronic music, past and present' - published pieces covering experimental electronic and electro-acoustic music and Jake worked with his PhD supervisor Christopher Hayworth on editing.

The journal features articles by Jake on DJ workshops held in a Tottenham school alongside a piece with interviews with Maria Chavez and grime DJ, producer and now author Elijah about informal education networks

Commenting, Jake said: "The idea came from speaking with my PhD supervisor Christopher about electronic music education and how it has this radical history but has now become more institutionalised."

Our ambitions were to look outside of academia to see what has been happening in the space and how it has evolved. It's really great that the journal worked out, it was quite a highlight for me in my career."

As part of his PhD research, Jake has also been exploring digital DJing in the classroom, a topic he also wrote about in the journal.

He applied for ICMP seed funding to help support his work at a school in Tottenham. As part of his innovative Sound Art project, students explored the use of found sounds and DJ technology to create soundscapes and sound art compositions.

Jake said: "The ICMP support was invaluable in helping purchase DJ controllers to support the students with their work. Many see the cost of equipment as a barrier to the take up of DJing as a GCSE but that has now been reduced and the funding helped with this."

Alongside his research, Jake teaches ICMP's BA and MA in Creative Music Production

He also works on his DJing and turntablism project alongside an improvised group called Spectral Karaoke
