"I'm Emily, and I'm currently enrolled in the MA Music Business course. My journey began in Singapore, a place with limited infrastructure in the music industry. Recognising the need for a deeper understanding of a more developed music ecosystem, I was naturally drawn to the United Kingdom. The UK's rich and diverse music scene, known for its comprehensive structure and myriad opportunities, seemed like the perfect learning ground for someone like me, eager to delve deeper into the nuances of the music business.
The decision to pursue a Master's in Music Business was not just about academic advancement; it was about immersing myself in an environment where music isn't just entertainment but a significant cultural element. This course appeared to be the best avenue to not only gain academic knowledge but also to get a real-world introduction to the industry.
The experience at the institution has been incredibly enlightening. One of the most impactful aspects has been learning from teachers who are not just academicians but active players in the music industry. Their practical insights and real-life examples have given me a much clearer understanding of how the industry operates, which is particularly valuable for someone like me. Coming from a background where I had to manage music projects on a DIY basis, this exposure to professional standards and practices has been eye-opening.
Networking forms the backbone of the music business, and my time at ICMP has been pivotal in building these crucial connections. It's a place teeming with potential bandmates, collaborators, and future industry contacts. The environment here has not only been conducive to learning but also to meeting a variety of people who share the same passion for music. This networking has provided me with a real sense of what being a musician in London entails – a city known for its vibrant and eclectic music scene.
One of my biggest takeaways from this experience is the importance of being proactive in this dynamic environment. I set a personal goal to attend every possible networking event, be it school-organised or student-initiated. These gatherings are a melting pot of ideas, talents, and opportunities, essential for anyone looking to carve out a space in the music industry. My rationale was simple: these are the individuals who are going to shape the future of music, and being a part of this evolving landscape is crucial.
The London music scene is as vibrant as it is diverse. Every day presents a new opportunity – be it an invitation to play at an event, or a chance to collaborate with like-minded artists. What I find most admirable is the way music is celebrated and integrated into the culture here. There's a palpable energy and respect for the art form, which manifests in the plethora of opportunities and spaces available for artists. This vibrancy and richness of the London music scene is something I deeply appreciate and am grateful to be a part of."
