The Ultimate Student Packing List
We’ve put together an essential checklist of everything you need for university…
Who is getting ready for university this year?
Whether it’s your first or fourth year, you always need to make sure you have everything you need to make the most of your time while studying.
It can be challenging to get this right - particularly if you’re apprehensive about leaving home or just unsure of what you might need to take.
So to help relieve some of the worries, we’ve put together an essential checklist of everything you should consider packing to help you enjoy university to the max.
Essentials
Important documents
Work out what you will need to bring with you. For example, this could include identification, offer letter, confirmation of accommodation address, national insurance number, passport and passport photos…
Musical equipment
If you’re a musician or producer, then don’t forget the tools you’ll need to forge your career. This could be a guitar, box of pedals, four-track recorder and more...
If you're thinking of buying new instruments or equipment prior to starting at ICMP, don't forget that you'll be able to access various discounted deals on equipment via ICMP - it might be worth holding out to save some money.
Personal items
Anyone can feel homesick on leaving home for the first time. Remember to pack any photos or items that will make you feel more comfortable in your new accommodation.
Clothes
Make sure you pack enough clean items for at least a week - and make sure it’s weather appropriate. At the very least, take a coat and some shoes that can handle rain…
Financials
Credit card and debit card
In an increasingly cashless world, your credit and debit cards are essential..
Updated payment apps
If you use Apple Pay, then make sure you have the latest version of the app installed and it’s ready to use.
Student cards
As a student, many brands offer you discounted goods and services. Make sure you take advantage of these offers and add any student cards to your wallet, either digital or physical.
Domestic living
Kitchen appliances
This will depend on where you’re living - but if you move into somewhere unfurnished, then remember to take whatever essential kitchen appliances you might need. We recommend a kettle. A microwave might also be handy.
Other kitchen supplies
You will definitely need plates, bowls, mugs, cutlery and more… Saucepans can be expensive, so try and pick those up beforehand if you can. And don't forget a baking tray for any oven-cooked food!
Food and drink
Non-perishable food and drink items can be a brilliant resource while studying - think tins of soup, tea, dried pasta, coffee and more… Cooking oils and condiments will always be of use too
Sewing kit
In case of any clothing emergencies or repairs.
Academic
Books and course materials
Remember to pack whatever physical resources such as books or textbooks that will come in while you’re studying. You don’t have to buy everything before you get to university. To save money, you can use the library or even pick up second hand copies once you have started studying.
Sturdy backpack or bag
If you’re taking a laptop and any musical equipment to and from university, then you need something reliable to carry it in - preferably as durable as possible to keep your belongings secure and safe.
Desk supplies
Pens, pencils, paper, highlighters, stapler, and tape can all be essential stationery items.
Electrical items
Power sources
If you’re using a variety of electronic items, then you’ll need to make sure you have enough ways to keep powered up. Before heading to university, check you have plenty of extension leads, chargers and adaptors to keep everything turned on. A multi-plug extension lead might also serve you well, especially if you've already started developing your home studio set-up.
External hard drive
If you’re storing large files, backing-up content or moving digital assets, then this can be a great resource to rely on.
Speakers/Headphones
Essential for home listening and going to and from university.
Electronics
Laptop, laptop charger, mobile and mobile charger, and more. Don't forget that you'll be able to access discounts with your ICMP student email account, so hold off making any pre-uni purchases to ensure you make those savings.
Miscellaneous
Bike
Cycling around London can be a cost-effective way of getting from a to b. If you are going to take the plunge, then remember your wheels alongside a helmet, tyre pump and puncture repair kit.
Storage containers
Studying at university will mean you will have plenty of resources, tech and musical equipment to look after. Utilising containers of some kind can be a great way of staying on top of potential clutter.
Umbrella/winter gear
We've already mentioned this but taking a coat and appropriate winter gear can be very useful. Especially when studying in the UK and its unpredictable weather.
Bedding and bath
Bedding
Sheets, duvet, blanket, pillows and pillowcases are all essential.
Towels
As our hand towels, bath towels and flannels.
