We’ve seen Drake dominate the charts with multiple tracks, including 'God’s Plan' which spent nine weeks at number one. Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa’s ‘One Kiss’ was so well loved that it dominated the charts for eight weeks.
Summer saw the return of '3 Lions' during the World Cup. Ariana Grande’s positive spin on her love life and breakups ‘Thank U, Next’ resonated with people so much, that the song broke the records on both Spotify and Youtube across within 24 hours of its first release.
But what do the songs we love so much convey to us? We took a deeper look at the lyrics of this year’s number one hits to investigate the sentiment and see what trends there are.
We found that the top songs scored highly for a range of emotions, from joy to sadness and anger, with the feeling of joy, the most common across the year's biggest chart toppers. Check out the findings below:
