The MA Creative Music Production will see you study current trends and practices in all areas of digital audio recording and studio production, while exploring the context of sound and creativity within music production.

This masters in music production offers a substantial amount of both personalisation and collaboration, allowing you to concentrate on your own specific music production interests while working together with other students to fully realise your projects.

You'll be supported and mentored by exceptionally experienced tutors – all experts in creative, production and recording processes – while you learn to work autonomously using the latest industry-standard equipment.

This creative music production masters course culminates in the development and creation of a unique Creative Major Production Project – typically a market-ready showcase piece, such as an artist album or similar, for you to take with you into industry. Your creation of the project will be overseen by an ICMP supervisor, guiding you from start to finish with their impressive industry expertise.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Student financial support for postgraduate masters degree courses is available to students studying at ICMP. Eligible students on designated masters courses at ICMP will be able to access the postgraduate masters loan in the same way, and at the same value, as they could at a publicly funded provider. Individuals will be able to borrow up to £12,471. If you opt to study part-time, your loan would be split into two installments over the two years of study.

CREATIVE PRODUCTION PROJECT (60 CREDITS)

This module will provide you with clarity regarding your individual artistic intention within the field of music production, allowing you to evaluate current methodologies and establish a vision for future production practice. Seminars will see you analyse a range of both personal and external influences, and through discussion and self-directed research, you will develop your communication skills by articulating and comparing ideas, while identifying new areas of creative exploration.

Across this module you will develop an understanding of a range of music production techniques, while exploring a well-functioning consideration of creative intention and process. Through practical work, discussion and self-directed exercises, and by studying topics including creative production processes, idea generation and organisation, creative intention, drafting and development, you will examine and critique your own creative work, identifying areas to cultivate and explore.

Undertaking this module will equip you with innovative production skills for use across a range of circumstances. You will explore the role of innovation in studio production, especially in the context of your own work, and will study alternative production approaches across different styles and genres. Your confidence will improve as you expand your outlook, practical skill base and knowledge of innovative production techniques.

This module will develop your production skills via advanced mixing and mastering workshops which focus on the use of equalisation, advanced dynamic processing, automation and time-based effects. The module explores mixing as a creative technical process by evaluating current methodologies, and you will develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of mastering within the delivery process to deliver the highest industry production standards.

Your Major Production Project acts as a developmental ‘bridge’ into professional work contexts, supporting artistic independence and the creation of both generic and specific creative and entrepreneurial skills. As you progress your piece, you'll be guided by an ICMP tutor considered to be a specialist in your chosen field. Projects typically take the form of an artist album or similar body of creative production work.

TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

You will be taught at our campus in Kilburn and Queen's park, utilising our live rooms, tech suites and in-house music studio facilities as well as classrooms and lecture rooms. You will have access to use these facilities outside of class time while you are a student at ICMP in order to rehearse and record your music. 

You will be taught through a variety of teaching and learning methods including lectures, small group tutorials, performance workshops, music technology workshops tutorials and one-to one-tuition. 

You will have access to the Student Services Department for support and advice concerning welfare, finance, personal development, safeguarding and more. You'll also have access to our Professional Development team ‘The Hub', who provide bespoke music industry careers advice and access to unique industry opportunities.

Teaching and Learning

On the MA Creative Music Production programme you will be taught by lecture, seminar discussion, and practical workshops as appropriate.

When not attending lectures, seminars or other timetabled sessions you'll be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, concert venues, rehearsal facilities and preparing coursework assignments. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including our Learning Resource Centre, our many performance and practice rooms, well-equipped tech suites, production rooms and studios.

Assessment

All modules are individually assessed through a variety of means, including: recording portfolios, practical exams, paper exams, presentations, essays, reflective commentaries, workbooks and projects.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants will typically have achieved a 2:1 Honours degree or above or equivalent, usually in music or the arts, but also from other fields of study if music experience has been gained alongside this study and can be demonstrated at the interview. We welcome applicants from non-music-related academic backgrounds who are actively writing and involved in music. Please read our additional guidance here.

ICMP London school of music also welcomes applications from established practitioners who are keen to undertake study at the postgraduate level but may not possess the required qualifications. These students may be given credit for their prior study or experience.

International: English language requirement – minimum level B2 of the CEFR – for more information visit this website.

Please note: International students, who require a visa to study in the UK, are only eligible to study on this course full-time.

When completing the full application form for the MA in Creative Music Production course, please be aware that you will be required to submit a personal statement.

Additionally, you’ll be asked to attend an audition/interview. Further documentation or evidence in support of your application may be required in certain cases.
