COURSE OVERVIEW
The Vocal Performance, Technique and Recording course is part of ICMP’s range of Music Industry courses. Spanning two weeks of intensive learning and development, this course is an alternative version of our three-month-long Vocal Performance and Technique Industry Course.
Spend an intensive and action-packed two weeks developing your vocal performance and learning how to record your vocals in a studio, with twice weekly hands-on workshops and performance opportunities at ICMP.
Throughout the course, you’ll be guided by ICMP’s renowned professional Vocal tutors, who will provide you with in-depth coaching and constructive vocal feedback at every stage. You’ll gain impressive experience across both performance and studio recording, and will explore your own unique singing voice on a truly intimate level.
With access to ICMP’s state-of-the-art recording studio and performance facilities at Queen’s Park and Kilburn, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between technique and performance, as well as practical skills integral to your journey as a vocalist.
For the first part of the course, you’ll spend one lesson focusing on vocal technique and a second on live vocal performance. This combination balances the theoretical and practical sides of your learning, letting you consolidate your understanding and hone your skills by implementing each technique as you go along.
As you progress, you’ll cover the fundamentals of vocal performance: from finding and optimising your voice, to discovering your strengths and areas for improvement in solo and group performance work. Across the second week, you’ll take part in group singing workshops, a masterclass hosted by a special guest vocals lecturer, and ensemble and solo performance rehearsals, culminating in an exciting live gig.
The course will then see you learning how to record your vocals, both in a home studio set up and at ICMP’s professional on-campus recording studio. At the end of this intensive course, you’ll leave with two professionally recorded tracks – one solo and one ensemble – which you can use to promote yourself across the wider music industry.

Core Modules
The following modules make up the core elements that you'll study over your two-week course.
Technique and Performance I
Throughout this module, you’ll receive vocal training to optimise your voice and gain a greater understanding of the technical elements of singing, such as posture, breathing & voice qualities. You’ll also learn and perform two songs of your choice.
Technique and Performance II
Continuing on from the previous module, you’ll expand your knowledge of vocal techniques by exploring stylistic choices, chest voice vs head voice options, agility, and vocal colour and resonance. You’ll learn how to apply these on stage by choosing two additional songs, and will enhance the impact of your performance through improved stagecraft, storytelling and special effects.
Ensemble Work
By exploring the history and fundamentals of group singing, you’ll uncover leadership qualities you can put into practice when working with fellow vocalists in an ensemble. You’ll also develop your group singing techniques, vocal harmony and vocal blend abilities while you rehearse. This module includes a masterclass hosted by a prominent guest vocalist who will share their vast industry expertise.
Live Performance Preparation
Many factors contribute to a successful performance. Across this module, you’ll learn how to organise and select your repertoire, run rehearsals, and improve your confidence on stage. You’ll also get the chance to perform your solo and ensemble pieces in front of family and friends as part of an unforgettable live gig experience at our Queen’s Park performance venue.
Studio Vocals
Now that you’ve strengthened your stage presence, it’s time to take it to the studio. In this module, you’ll learn the ins and outs of navigating session vocals, including microphone and vocal production basics, and technique considerations unique to a recording studio environment. You’ll also learn how to work with a producer, including music studio etiquette and how to handle feedback.
Recording Vocals
In this module, you’ll cover how to record successfully at home and in a studio recording booth, as you work directly with a producer to record, edit, comp and mix two final projects: your solo track and the group ensemble piece. These will become fully realised demos that capture your unique sound, ready to be shared.
