Congratulations to ICMP Songwriting alumna, Essence Martins, on securing a spot in Birdy's band alongside tutor Charlotte Hatherley for a recent live stint in the US.
Featuring a live performance on the Today show, the tour included live dates in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Artist Birdy has released five records to date, including 2023's critically-acclaimed album, 'Portraits'.
Alongside her work with Birdy, Essence has also been working on her own solo material after she completed her studies with ICMP earlier in 2023.
Posting on Instagram earlier in the year, Essence said: "Thank you ICMP London for an unforgettable 3yrs!"
"I’ve grown so much, met the most incredible tutors, musicians and made friends for life! I’m nervous about entering the real world, but can’t wait for the next adventure. thank you to everyone who has supported my journey."
Shane Beales, ICMP BA Songwriting Programme Leader said: "Essence was a fantastic songwriting student who showed great commitment to developing her craft throughout her time at ICMP. She came to every class with new material ready to share, responded proactively to feedback from tutors and peers, and was always championing the work of her peers in and out of the classroom."
The opportunity came through Charlotte who was Essence's tutor as well as a member of Birdy's band. She shared Essence's music with Birdy's Musical Director Richard Evans which led to the role opening up.
Continuing, Shane said:
I was so delighted that Essence was able to join Birdy's band - it all sprang up very organically and it was a demonstration of the magic that can happen in the ICMP community! Essence showed tremendous courage and dedication in embarking on her first tour alongside completing her third year coursework in March/April."
"As well as playing with Birdy, Essence has also started to release her own music - which is sounding great! All in all it has been so wonderful to see how far Essence has come in the three and a bit years since she arrived at ICMP, and I wish her all the very best with the exciting next chapter in her career!"
