ICMP's Creative and Performance Programme Faculty hosted sessions as part of the Misogyny in Music Study Day at the Southampton Centre for Music Education and Social Justice.

Taking place on 22nd November, the event saw a variety of academics, researchers and thought leaders come together to discuss, debate and present research surrounding this important music industry issue.

The event follows the publication of the UK government's Misogyny in Music report, published by the Women and Equalities Committee in January 2024.

The report highlighted the underrepresentation of women and non-binary professionals in the music industry.

Commenting, Sophie Daniels, ICMP's Head of School, said:

We had an exceptional day at Southampton University's new centre for Music Education and Social Justice on Friday where we shared our experience of Misogyny in Music, met RH Caroline Noakes MP to review progress on the government report."

"I shared my research 'Does it Matter Who Writes the Songs that Soundtrack our Lives'?"

Continuing, Sophie said: "Lucy James, Dr. Catherine Anne Davies and Loretta Andrews were all brilliant on behalf of ICMP. Dr Metka Potocnik and I were also delighted to be representing The F-List for Music."

Other speakers at the event included Marianne Brown from University of London who gave a talk titled 'Music for All: Transformative Elements of Music Projects for Women and Children Fleeing Domestic Violence' and Rt Hon Caroline Nokes, MP, who chaired a Q&A based on the Misogyny in Music report.
