ICMP recently welcomed Music for Nations’ manager Joel De’ath for a series of exclusive A&R 1:1s with students.
Joel De’ath is label manager at rock label Music For Nations (MFN).
Originally releasing music by acts such as Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth, MFN was revived last year by Sony and is actively seeking new artists.
Joel has enjoyed almost 20 years in the music industry, having worked for independent (Infectious) and major labels (Atlantic, Sony) as well as in management (The Joy Formidable).
Commenting on his visit to ICMP, Joel said:
I had a great experience at ICMP - there was an amazing variety of music that I heard and I’m excited to hear how some of these artists will develop in the future.”
Joel also gave us some advice on how new artists can stand out in the current musical marketplace.
The best piece of advice I have for new bands is to focus on songwriting. While social media is important, there’s too much emphasis on Instagram, Facebook and making videos early on in their careers. During these formative stages, the focus should be on creating great songs."
“So I advise a lot of new artists to keep their heads down and concentrate on writing brilliant music. Think of it as a creative muscle that you constantly need to exercise to improve.”
