ICMP is honoured to host the annual Music and/as Process Study Group Conference in July 2019.
Taking place on Friday 26th July, the event will welcome top academics to explore the processes involved in realising collaborative scores, culminating in a series of unique performances of music created on the day.
The Music and/as Process Study Group represents scholars from a wide range of musical genres and disciplines which, in many cases, are also areas of scholarship under-represented within ‘traditional’ musicology.
This includes contemporary and experimental music, improvisation and improvisatory practices, ‘early’ (pre-tonal and mediaeval) music, non-western music, and music understood through practice and practice-led approaches.
The conference will feature workshops, discussion and performances of the music worked on throughout the day. This year’s conference will be hosted by leading music college ICMP and co-ordinated by ICMP lecturer, composer, academic and examiner Dr Steve Gisby.
Steve commented:
This year’s conference will be a fascinating event. Collaboration in creativity raises all sorts of interesting questions that can be applied to a wide variety of musical situations and genres. I’m excited to see what directions the discussions and performances take the participants in."
About the Music and/as Process Study Group
Formed in 2013, the Music and/as Process Study Group aims to bring together performers, researchers and academics working on issues related to and arising from such a definition of ‘process’ in music. The group’s core areas of interest include compositional issues, performance practice, and the musicology of process in music. They also have a key interest in practice-led research.
Committee members hold positions at Goldsmiths, the University of Wolverhampton, Canterbury Christ Church University, Edinburgh Napier University and ICMP.
An annual event with a global reach
The annual event aims to bring together the current study group members, along with other scholars in the field of Music and/as Process to examine current research in the topic and set the agenda for the coming year.
The event is open to all, musicians, academics and students, and as such has a global reach. Previous events have drawn delegates, engaged in traditional and practice-led research, from four continents. Previously, Edinburgh Napier University, University of Wolverhampton, Bath Spa University, Goldsmiths, Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Huddersfield have all hosted.
Keynote speakers at previous events have included composers Tom Johnson and Howard Skempton, Prof. Jane Alden (Wesleyan University, USA), Prof. Cornelius Schwehr (Freiburg Musikhochschule, Germany) and Jennie Gottschalk (author of the book ‘Experimental Music Since 1970’).
ICMP Director and Dean, Dr Tony Harris said
Conferences are a vital part of ICMP’s programme of research and scholarly activity. We’re delighted to be hosting this unique event that brings together esteemed academics and musicians. Our students and staff will have the chance to explore new ideas and cutting edge approaches to the concept of ‘process’ within composition, and will be a showcase for the eclectic range of genres and musical disciplines that ICMP promotes.”
