ICMP students from our BA Creative Music Production Programme were invited to spend two days gaining invaluable recording experience at the Fish Factory Studio.
Located in Willesden Junction, the studio has seen many of contemporary music's great record and work on music in the space.
The likes of Roisin Murphy, Honeyblood and Sons of Kemet have all recorded there.
The students had the opportunity to record two student bands and get to grips with vintage microphones and recording equipment. The studio is full of extremely rare and sought after-recording equipment including an old vintage Neve console.
Josh Hills, Deputy Programme Leader for Music Production, arranged and engineered the trip for the students.
He said:
It was great to see our students get hands-on with all of the Fish Factory’s amazing vintage and analogue gear while building on their professional skills."
Saint Clair, an ICMP band featuring students from various programmes, worked with the production students in the studio.
Daniel Smith, ICMP student who participated in the visit, said: "Fish Factory was a fantastic experience. Being able to use such legendary vintage gear allowed me to understand where the sound of many of my favourite songs and artist came from and the recording techniques they used."
Having the chance to run a session on the Neve console taught me how to record using a different workflow, while it’s limitations provided different challenges, pushing me out of my comfort zone. The overall experience was both inspiring and invaluable!"
Fellow ICMP student Emilia Buchanan added: "The trip to Fish Factory Studios was definitely a highlight of this year! As soon as we walked in we were geeking out over all the vintage gear they had - especially the desk. I'm so glad we had the chance to record there as a class and the end recordings sounded beautiful!"
Previously, ICMP students have had the chance to record in London's Konk Studios.
This latest trip was part of the new final year Advanced Studio Production module launched in September 2022 with the aim of authentically embedding industry experience within the curriculum.
