We were delighted to host BBC Radio 1’s Phil Taggart for an afternoon of exclusive 1:1 A&R sessions.
ICMP students and alumni were invited to meet with Phil to discuss their music, careers and receive advice.
The self-confessed ‘new music nerd’ cut his teeth in the band Colenso Parade before joining the BBC. Outside of broadcasting on BBC Radio 1 and TV presenting, Phil also runs indie label Hometown Records and hosts his monthly club night Slacker which has championed the likes of Rat Boy and The Japanese House.
On the invitation of our careers team in The Hub, he spent two hours with each ICMP artist including songwriting student Iyamah. He went on to play her debut single 'Cryptic Love' on his BBC Radio 1’s Chillest Show following his visit.
Commenting on the benefits of institutions such as ICMP, Phil said:
ICMP has a proven record of producing talent who’ve gone on to do wild things in music - look at Louise in Bloc Party and Clean Bandit. Matt Maltese studied here and he's is one of my favourite new artists."
He continued: "It’s not just the knowledge they get at ICMP but the tangible things of getting into a great studio, having talented people and equipment around them. For them to have all this at their disposal is so valuable."
Watch our video interview with Phil on his visit and look out for a second video on his essential advice for new artists.
