Leslie Gaston-Bird | Music Production Tutor

Leslie Gaston-Bird (AMPS, MPSE) enjoys being active in all types of audio production.

She's worked for National Public Radio (Washington, D.C., USA) and Colorado Public Radio (Denver, Colorado, USA). She recorded the Colorado Symphony Orchestra as well as rock bands.

Leslie is a classically trained pianist and also plays electric bass. For her masters degree, she pioneered a type of music video production for which she coined the term “Music Video Vérité”, a style which favors live performance over lip-synching.

Leslie spent 13 years as a professor at the University of Colorado Denver, focusing on research into multichannel and immersive audio formats.

She has most recently served leadership roles in the Audio Engineering Society as Vice President and will begin a term as Governor-at-Large in 2019. She has several film credits including 'Doc of the Dead' (featuring cameos by Simon Pegg), 'Infinity Chamber', 'Klocked', and 'Feral'.

Leslie has also directed and produced several music videos including this featuring Left Hand Shakes:

In late 2019, Leslie released her book Women in Audio. Published by Routledge, the book features almost 100 profiles and stories of audio engineers who are women and have achieved success throughout the history of the commercial audio. The book covers diverse fields such as sound for film and television; music recording and electronic music;  acoustics; live sound and sound for theater; education; audio for games, virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, as well as immersive sound.
