ICMP's Head of Songwriting Sophie Daniels was among the speakers at the prestigious Association of Popular Music Education (APME) international conference at Edinburgh Napier University.

She featured alongside list of similar distinguished academics and music industry professionals participating at the event.

Sophie was presenting on her research surrounding 'Why We Write Songs', a project which has seen her speak with various members of the international songwriting community, and host a series of round table discussion panels, across different types of practice, to discover creative motivations.

Commenting, Sophie said:

Alongside speaking at the event, some of the highlights for me included the excellent keynote from Professor Nathan Holder who somehow managed to be up to date, wise, empathetic and inclusive yet made sure his speech turned over each and every stone for a look at what we needed to see … the perfect tone."

"And meeting new international songwriting colleagues including Tina Broad."

Other speakers included Callen Love discussing stagecraft in popular music education, Gareth Dylan Smith on collaborative songwriting and Randy Klein exploring the art of listening to songs.

Sophie's research has seen her host different roundtables at ICMP

Guests have included Miranda Cooper, one of the UK's most successful non-performing female songwriters and Mary Gauthier, Grammy nominated US singer/songwriter and author of the 2021 highly acclaimed book 'Saved By A Song'.
